Sustainability and Our Business
The power of plant-based is the power to transform our food system for the betterment of our planet, our communities, and our health.
We believe that by creating delicious and versatile plant-based alternatives to dairy products that we will excite people to make more sustainable food choices.
The Califia Impact
Our 2021 Sustainability Report explains how far we’ve come, what we’re working on now, and where we’re headed in the future.
Plant-based is planet-based.
We’re doing our part by creating delicious plant-based alternatives to dairy, and you’re doing yours by staying plant-curious.
Plant-based is people-based.
Our products are made with simple, dairy-free and plant-based ingredients with a rich array of vitamins, minerals, healthy fats, and phytonutrients.
Our Impact and Goals
As a plant-based dairy company, we can’t separate sustainability from what we do.
Since producing oat and almond milk uses less water and land, and emits less greenhouse gas compared to dairy, we are already on the path to a more sustainable food system. But we know that simply making plant-based products is not enough. To affect real, lasting change, we need to set rigorous goals for our company in the short, medium, and long term.
Contribute to Resilient Agriculture
Promote a more sustainable supply chain through engagement in industry partnerships and deepening relationships with farmers and suppliers.
Our strategy to address farming practices and farmer livelihoods focuses on the priority crops that make up most of Califia’s direct purchased ingredients such as Almonds, Oats, Coffee, Cocoa, and Vanilla.
Accelerate the Circular Economy
Improve the circularity of our packaging and achieve zero waste at our manufacturing facility in Bakersfield, California.
Packaging is a key part of our sustainability plan. We’re moving our packaging to a circular model, which means improving the recyclability of our packaging, eliminating plastic we don’t need, and using more recycled materials.
Advance Climate Solutions
Reduce our GHG emissions throughout our supply chain and use renewable energy in our manufacturing.
Because we are plant-based, our GHG emissions and land-use requirements are inherently less than that of dairy and animal-based agriculture. However, we do have a climate footprint which is why we are focusing on improving sustainability in our transportation and packaging, as well as energy and water usage.
Be a Positive Force for People and Communities
Build a healthy workplace culture at Califia and create healthy, nutritious plant-based products for communities everywhere.
It starts with the care we put into our products, and extends to our safe, respectful, and inclusive workplace, and then out into our communities of Los Angeles and Bakersfield, California where we are active members.
